St Albans Prison outside Port Elizabeth remains under lockdown following Monday's attack on prison officials by inmates which left three prisoners dead and 13 correctional services staff injured, six of them critically.
The three deceased offenders identified as Bonisile Khayingo(42), Mziyanda Mafa (24) and Luzuko Ncokazi (22) were serving lengthy prison terms for crimes ranging from murder to robbery.
The mass brawl broken out shortly after the morning meal on Monday when 33 prisoners started attacking guards in the dining hall of the Maximum B facility with a variety of sharp objects.
Eastern Cape Correctional Services Commissioner, Nkosinathi Breakfast said he could not give an indication of when the lockdown would be lifted.
Breakfast said the investigation into the incident at the Maximum B facility was ongoing and the lockdown would likely be lifted in other parts of the prison this weekend.
