St Albans quiet after mass prison brawl

The Department of Correctional Services in the Eastern Cape is assembling a team to probe last week's mass brawl at St Albans prison outside Port Elizabeth.

Three awaiting trial prisoners were killed in clashes which broke out in six cells in Medium A awaiting trial section.

Correctional Services provincial commissioner, Nkosinathi Breakfast, says three of the 65 offendors who were injured remain in hospital.

He says the situation has been normalised at the prison.

"At this point the situation at St Albans is normal, the centre is operational but under control. Our officials are still alert," he said.

He said the team that he is assembling will conduct the investigation into the prison brawl while police are investigating the deaths of the three inmates.
