Low key start for integrated bus service in PE

Nelson Mandela Bay's new integrated bus service got off to a low key start on Monday.

Members of the media were treated to the first public ride on the articulated busses, travelling along the routes that serve as the pilot phase for the service.

The Transport Department has now issued operator licenses for all 25 busses which were procured ahead of the 2010 World Cup at a cost of more than R100m.

Algoa FM News reporter Raahil Sain spoke to municipal official Luyanda Majola who was experiencing the IPTS for the first time.

"It is the first time I am travelling with the bus I was trying to be part of the initiative of the government of having these buses. When I am traveling with the bus it is more convenient and I feel comfortable, in the future I will use the IPTS" Majola

Meanwhile, former city councillor Aubrey Mali also took his first ride on the new busses.

Mali once chaired the transport forum dealing with the strategic planning for the integrated public transport services.

He says he's very impressed with the busses and the security measures on board which include CCTV.

"To rob these busses is not going to be easy our community and even the driver will be safer, because in the past they were easily robbed but now the masses together with the institution reinforced by security" Mali said
