The Department of Correctional Services in Port Elizabeth has confirmed the violent stabbing of a prison official by an inmate over the weekend.
Department spokesperson Manelisi Wolela says the official was stabbed several times on Sunday at St Albans prison and the offender has since been placed in isolation.
Wolela says the warder has been treated for his injuries and is recovering back home.
He says the offender will now undergo an internal disciplinary process and a criminal investigation is underway to establish a motive for the incident.
"An offender stabbed an official a number of times, about four times, on his back neck and face as well. Stabbing someone is a very serious offence and we ensure that those who perpetrate our officials will face the full might of the law." says Wolela
