A female official from St Albans Medium A Correctional Centre, situated on the outskirts of Gqeberha, is in police custody after she was caught red-handed with drugs inside the facility.
A spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says the woman was caught by correctional centre authorities on Thursday who witnessed her attempting to hand over 95 mandrax tablets to a remand detainee.
She says officials from the Kabega Park Police Station were called to the scene and arrested the official.
A case has been opened and she will spend the night behind bars before appearing in court, possibly on Friday.
Gantana says the Department has also started with disciplinary action against her.
She says any person, whether a member of the public or a departmental official who colludes with offenders, will be brought to book.
Gantana applauded the commitment of the other officials who did not hesitate to apprehend one of their own as it speaks to their integrity.
