The Eastern Cape government has awarded nearly R1b worth of contracts to civil servants or their close family members.
This emerged in the legislature during debate on the report of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts for the 2010/2011 financial year for provincial departments.
DA leader in the House, Bobby Stevenson, says altogether 637 contracts were awarded to Provincial Officials involving more than R924m.
He says he welcomes Finance MEC, Pumulo Musualle's statement that they are developing a policy to address this so-called insider-trading.
"Where civil servants or suppliers are doing business with the province where there is a connection to an employee there needs to be a declaration of interest and if those declaration of interests are not made the contract should be declared null and void and those officials or suppliers or whatever the case may be should be blacklisted and should not be allowed to do business with the province until this policy is finalised" Stevenson said.
