A special SA Police Service railway coach has been added to the train servicing the route between Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge says the coach, which will serve as a SAPS Rapid Rail Unit mobile service centre, was handed over by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa to the Unit commander on Friday.
He says the Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie attended the handover and inspected the new coach, which is fully branded with SAPS logos.
Beetge says the coach is also fully equipped with registers, safes and holding cells, as well as a kitchen and two sleeping compartments for police members.
He says the main purpose of this joint partnership between Prasa and the police is to combat and prevent crime on the train while travelling between the two destinations.
Cases registered and arrests made on the train will be handed over and transferred to the relevant station in the areas through which the train moved when the crimes were committed.
