Spat looms of over school infrastructure

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says she will publish the provincial plans for school infrastructure as she promised last year upon receiving the drafts from all provinces.

In a statement yesterday, Motshekga said the infrastructure plans were discussed at the last meeting of the Council of Education Ministers two weeks ago.

She said it was agreed that provinces would finalise and prepare these plans for publishing.

Motshekga said her Department had nothing to hide, adding that it was unfortunate that some organisations want the plans to be rushed at the expense of internal processes.

The education lobby group Equal Education said it would hold protests in the Eastern and Western Cape from Wednesday, claiming that the Education MEC's had presented their infrastructure plans to Motshekga last November.

Equal Education's Eastern Cape Deputy Head, Daniel Linde says protests by members and learners will take place at the Department's provincial offices in Zwelitsha.
