Continuous pressure by civil rights organisation AfriForum on the Chris Hani District Municipality to lower water tariffs, has borne fruit.
Spokesperson, Anton Brummer says initial tariff increases as high as 600% were on the cards for some consumers in Queenstown, Middelburg, Cradock, Dordrecht, Tarkastad, Hofmeyr, Molteno, Cala, Sterkstroom and Elliot.
Brummer says AfriForum had already instructed their legal team to continue with a court application, but decided to – as a last attempt – try and convince the Municipality that the astronomical tariff hikes would not be defensible.
He says the tariffs were then drastically lowered.
Brummer says the tariff of the highest tariff block was lowered from R84 to R18 per thousand litre of water consumed.
