South Africa LAST in maths and science education

A report by the World Economic Forum says the quality of South Africa's maths and science education places it last out of 148 countries.

The UN reports says under the "skills" sub-category, the quality of South Africa's maths and science education comes in last place, behind the likes of Haiti, Lesotho, Chad, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Kenya.

DA spokesperson on Education, Annette Lovemore, says she will be be seeking to have Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, brought before Parliament to account for what she said was the worsening state of South Africa's education system.

She says the ministerial task team established to investigate teaching in maths, science and technology last year released a "damning report" about South Africa's education.

Lovermore says the ministerial report exposed gaping holes at every level of the country's education system.

Meanwhile the department of basic education on Monday rejected a World Economic Forum report about the state of the country's maths and science education.

"The report is not a credible or accurate reflection of the state of education in South Africa," the department said in a statement.
