Magistrate Abigail Beeton is giving full reasons in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's court today as to why she denied bail in the Christopher Panayiotou case.
The 28-year old businessman is accused of orchestrating the abduction and murder of his school teacher wife Jayde, whose body was found near Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage in late April, the day after she was reported missing.
Panayiotou is in court, and his being supported by his family. Jayde's family is not in court today.
Panayiotou's failure to disclose his Cypriot connections may have been the tipping point in him being denied bail.
Magistrate Abigail Beeton spend more than an hour pouring over Panayiotou's bail application, highlighting key aspects identified by the defence Council. She did the same in summarising the State's case.
It was in dealing with Christopher Panayiotou's failure to disclose Cyprian connections in his founding affidavit that Beeton picked up on.
The Court heard that Christopher had a Cypriot ID and Passport, Beeton said had this not come to light in the additional affidavit by the Investigating Officer, Kanna Swanepoel, the Court would have been ignorant to the fact.
Beeton said it was her view that this disclosure would have been crucial to the bail application.
The hearing continues.
