Eleven local and international teams taking part in the Sasol Solar Challenge will pass through Graaff-Reinet en-route from Pretoria to Cape Town.
Teams are expected to reach Graaff Reinet late on Tuesday afternoon.
The challenge is ranked as a top global event and demonstrates the power of solar technology.
The vehicles, fuelled only by sunlight are expected to reach the Mother City this weekend.
Race Director, Winstone Jordaan, says "Effectively they are electric vehicles so they have a battery inside them. Cloud cover is not a bad thing for solar, a lot of people think the sun does not get through. The sun does get through the cloud, it gets trapped under the cloud. The solar pannels are probably 80% efficient even when there is cloud cover."
