The sod was turned on Wednesday for the first wind farm to be developed in a working quarry.
Construction of the R1.2 billion Grassridge Wind Energy Facility at Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, will now commence inside the PPC quarry and will be developed by Innowind, a local wind energy developer owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles.
The wind farm will be owned by a joint venture company, Grassridge Wind Power, which comprises Innowind, the Industrial Development Corporation and the Grassridge Winds of Change Community Trust.
The windfarm will consist of 20 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 61.5 megawats.
Innowind project manager, Kevin Minkoff, says the development is the first phase of possible future wind farm expansions in the Motherwell vicinity.
PPC's group energy manager, Egmont Otterman, says project is the first step for them in procuring power from renewable energy sources.
