Small-scale fishers receive historic 15% squid quota

Small-scale fishers in the Chokka industry were due to take to the sea on Monday after receiving a historic 15% squid quota from the Department of Environmental Affairs.

Two vessels from historically disadvantaged fishers were due to launch from the Port in Gqeberha for the first time since quota allocations were expanded to include small-scale fishers as well as cooperatives.

The chairperson of the Eastern Cape Khoi Fishers, Deon Spandiel, says they would launch two boats on Monday, and anticipate launching four more on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environmental Affairs says it has not yet received any appeals against the historic quota allocation.
