UPDATE: Police on Tuesday (16 November 2020) confirmed that DNA results pertaining to the identity of a skeleton found in Sherwood are that of the missing person, Adriaan Scheepers.
Police in Gqeberha have discovered the skeletal remains of a man they believe to be that of the missing Adriaan Scheepers.
The 55-year-old Scheepers was reported missing a year ago after his landlord became suspicious when he did not see him for days.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says on Monday evening, firefighters were attending to a fire and found the remains after the flames were extinguished.
She says police officers from Kabega were at the Walker Drive shopping centre attending to a complaint when a fireman approached them and led them to the skeletal remains.
According to the family, the clothing and cellphone found near the skeleton are believed to be that of Adriaan Scheepers.
Janse van Rensburg says DNA tests will be conducted to make a formal identification.
She says the phone found on the scene was also handed over to Cyber Unit.
According to detectives, Scheepers switched off his phone and no activity was registered on his device since the day he disappeared, there was also no money drawn from his bank account.
Police at the time had several searches for Scheepers and expanded their search all the way to van Stadens.
