Sixth suspect in court for murder of Coffee Bay police constable

A sixth suspect arrested for the murder of 26-year-old police Constable Lonwabo Soga at Coffee Bay in early December made a brief appearance in the Mqanduli Magistrate's court on Friday.

Captain Anelisa Ngcakani of the Hawks says 27-year-old Bonginkosi Ndevu was arrested in Qunu on Wednesday following a police intelligence-driven operation.

Four suspects were initially arrested on the 6th of December, three days after the deadly attack on Constable Soga.

The fifth accused was arrested on the 11th of December at a hospital in Elliotdale where he was recovering from injuries sustained when he was allegedly stabbed by Ndevu as a result of a dispute between them.

During the arrest of the first four accused, police recovered ammunition and six firearms including the one belonging to Constable Soga.

An assortment of police equipment including hand cuffs, a reflector jacket and a hand radio were also found during the arrests.

All six accused remain in custody and they'll appear together at their next court appearance on the 22nd of January on charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
