Sixth suspect arrested following foiled cash-in-transit heist in Mthatha

File

A sixth suspect has been arrested following a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Mthatha in January.

Hawks spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says the 27-year-old was arrested in a joint operation by the Provincial Cash-In-Transit Task Team this week.

She says the five co-accused, aged between 27 and 39, were remanded in custody after they were arrested on 26 January near Qumbu on charges of attempted cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The attempted robbery took place at a supermarket in Mthatha on 25 January involving a Fidelity Cash Solution truck.

A security guard was allegedly shot and robbed of his firearm during the incident while a bystander was also hit by a stray bullet.

Captain Mgolodela says on 9 February, police received information about a Toyota single-cab bakkie which was one of the vehicles that were allegedly used by the suspects during the attempted robbery that it was parked at the Mthatha Plaza.

The occupant of the bakkie was positively identified by the investigating team and was arrested.

The suspects will be back in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a formal bail application.
