The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has recorded it's sixth COVID-19 fatality.
Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says the latest death was that of a 58-year old official in the Western Cape.
He said the man was also diabetic which hampered his efforts at recovery.
The Eastern Cape Correctional Services Department currently has 490 active COVID-19 cases - 77 of those infected are officials and the remainder are inmates.
Three of the Department’s six deaths were recorded in the Eastern Cape.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Department nationally stands at 746 with 264 officials and 482 inmates infected.
There have been 173 confirmed recoveries.
