Sixteen remand detainees escaped from the Medium A section of a Johannesburg prison early on Monday morning, a correctional services spokesman confirmed.
"According to a preliminary investigation, these remand detainees escaped in the morning at approximately 03:00. They escaped through a pipe shaft and used an object to break the wall then proceeded to the fence," a statement from correctional services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said
Nxumalo said police are helping them with the manhunt for the suspects.
"The Department will later issue a detailed statement containing names and images of the escapees and is appealing to the public to assist with any information that could lead to their re-arrest. "
