Sixteen people, including two taxi drivers, were arrested at a roadblock in Aliwal North on Wednesday night.

A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says the adults were all in possession of fraudulent funeral permits.

He says the passengers were travelling from Engcobo to Carletonville on the West Rand where the alleged funeral was said to be taking place.

Binqose says the fight against Covid-19 is taken very seriously in the Eastern Cape as the number of infections is escalating at an alarming rate.

He welcomed the arrest and commended the officers for performing their duties without fear or favour.

Binqose says it they will now investigate where the fraudulent funeral permits were obtained from.

The 16 face a charge of contravening the lockdown regulations.

The Eastern Cape Government has urged members of the community to adhere to the current lockdown regulations to curb the spread of COVID19.

Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba especially called on bereaved families and communities to stop organizing funerals with large numbers of people.

The current regulations allow for 50 people to be present which includes the undertakers and other support staff.

Several people in the Eastern Cape have tested positive for COVID19 after attending a funeral.
