Six suspects are expected to make their second court appearance in Mount Fletcher on Tuesday following their arrest for kidnapping and assaulting an elderly woman they accused of being a witch.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, says community members from Zinyosini alerted police about a mob justice incident last week.
He says when they arrived on the scene the 81-year-old woman was already naked, tied up with rope and being assaulted in full view of the community.
Brigadier Kinana says the Station Commander assembled stakeholders from the Municipality, Traditional Leaders and Social Development in an attempt to rescue the elderly victim from the violent crowd.
He says she was eventually removed from the mob and taken to a place of safety.
Police arrested six men between the ages of 30 and 40 and opened cases of assault, kidnapping and imputing witchcraft against them.
The men have been in custody for more than a week and are expected to apply for bail at Tuesday’s court appearance.
