Six pedestrians died after they were knocked down by a vehicle on the R61 in Mbizana in the Eastern Cape on Friday night.
The accident happened around 11 pm on the R61 road Mbizana at Redoubt near Mzamba towards Port Edward.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesman, Unathi Binqose said the driver of a BMW sedan was traveling from the Mbizana direction, heading towards Port Alfred.
He is said to have had another male passenger in the vehicle.
The six pedestrians, all men, were walking along the road at the time that the accident occurred.
Five died on the scene, while the sixth man died on the way to the hospital.
"The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage.
"The police are on the heels of the driver of the sedan as he abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene after the crash.
"The vehicle has been towed to a police pound," said Binqose.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.
