Flights landing at the Mthatha Airport had to be diverted to the King Phalo Airport in East London on Saturday following an abrupt protest by firefighters.
A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose said flights had to be diverted as it is strictly prohibited for flights to land without firefighters on standby.
He said the Eastern Cape Department of Transport made arrangements to safely land flights on Sunday by bringing firefighters from the Buffalo City Metro.
Binqose did not elaborate on why firefighters protested but said they were attending to the internal challenges.
The dispute, however, is believed to be related to overtime monies not paid.
Last month the Mthatha Airport was brought to a complete standstill when gun-wielding suspects entered the premises.
