Burgersdorp police nets stock theft suspects

The police in Burgersdorp arrested two suspects in connection with stock theft and managed to recover stolen sheep worth R100,000.

The arrest of the 28-year-old and the 54-year-old suspects came on Friday, after police followed up on information about sheep being sold in the town.

Police spokesperson Captain Ursula Roelofse said upon receiving the information, police swiftly proceeded to the area with the assistance of Stock Theft members.

"Thorough investigation led police to six different houses in Dubai and Thembisa localities where they found sheep carcasses.

"It was reported that the stock was stolen from a farm outside Burgersdorp," she said.

According to Roelofse, police recovered 19 live sheep, and the intestines, heads and feet of 18 slaughtered sheep next to the local dam.

Out of the 40 sheep that were reported stolen, police managed to recover 37 sheep to the value of R 100,000.

The 37 sheep were handed over to the lawful owner

Upon further investigation two additional suspects were arrested for possession of stolen stock and one for receiving suspected stolen meat.

Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem commended the members for the swift response in ensuring the recovery and arrests.
