The Eastern Cape Transport Department said at least three people, including a police detective, were killed in a five-vehicle collision in the Kei Cuttings on Friday.
Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the vehicles involved in the early evening crash included an “unmarked police van”, a taxi, a sedan, and two bakkies.
He said, “It’s alleged the police van was trying to overtake when it collided with the sedan.”
Three more vehicles including a fully loaded minibus taxi then got involved in a secondary collision.
All the occupants of the fully loaded minibus taxi escaped unscathed.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
