Six Eastern Cape men arrested for stock theft

Msobomvu police have arrested six men between the ages of 23 and 46 for stock theft, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The suspects were arrested on Sunday morning at the Eziteneni informal settlement near Extension 15 in Butterworth, spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“It is alleged that the cow owner from Tanga village, Butterworth was tipped off that his cow had been slaughtered at the informal settlement. He proceeded with Msobomvu police to the informal settlement. The suspects were found with cooked and uncooked cow meat.”

They were all arrested and charged with stock theft. Another cow was found injured not far from the informal settlement and it was suspected that it was also going to be slaughtered.

Police appealed to livestock owners to look after their livestock. Police would be more visible in the rural areas and malls during the festive season to prevent crime. The suspects were due to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Manatha said.
