Port Elizabeth police have opened an inquest docket after a 64 year old man died in a fire at a lodgings establishment in Du Preez Street, Sidwell, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Warrant Officer Alwin Labans says the fire broke out shortly after 3 am.
He said the deceased had suffered a stroke and was bedridden and had been unable to flee the fire.
No one else was injured in incident and the cause of the fire is being investigated.
Meanwhile - Port Elizabeth police are investigating a double-murder following a shooting incident in Jack Street, Missionvale, back on Friday night.
Warrant Officer Labans says two men were parked in a car in Jack street when an unknown man walked up to them and opened fire.
Both men were rushed to hospital where one was declared dead on arrival.
The other victim died a short while later.
W/O Labans said the shooting did not appear to be gang-related and that police were trying to establish the motive for the incident.
