Situation calm in Northern Areas following protests

Port Elizabeth police say the situation in the northern areas is calm following sporadic protests on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson, warrant office Alwin Labans, says they're continuing to monitor the situation after disgruntled residents in the Helenvale area took to the streets demanding jobs linked the municipality integrated transport system.

He says councillors and community leaders addressed more than a hundred people who have now dispersed.

Earlier, police were called to deal with a service delivery protest in the Missionvale area after residents set up burning barricades in several streets.

Two people have been arrested on charges of public violence.
