The Missionvale Care Centre in Gqeberha will honour the legacy of its founder, Sister Ethel Normoyle, by memorialising 16 August as Sister Ethel Day.
This was announced on Tuesday as the Centre marked a year since the passing of the Irish-born nun in Dublin after losing her battle with cancer.
The Centre's marketing manager, Linda van Oudsheusden, says this is how they want to preserve her “memory, values and ethos.”
One of the speakers at the event, Deacon Roland Dace, said Normoyle provided beyond food and clothes to the disadvantaged community of Missionvale.
“She did not look at their wants, she considered their needs. Her vision brought hope to the people of Missionvale,” he said.
A member of the local community, Amelia Afrikaner, remembered Sister Ethel as a “humble person”, saying the community was still benefitting from her.
A Centre Board member, Samantha Streak, vowed to ensure that the work of Sister Ethel continues long after her passing.
“The centre must continue to serve the people and the community must continue to receive support from the centre. Our responsibility is to keep the bigger picture in mind. We are working on plans to ensure that we grow the centre in more ways,” she said.
