Three children have perished in a fire that swept through a shack in Pendla Street in New Brighton in Gqeberha.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says their father had left for work after 6 am, while the mother left the sleeping children to go to a nearby shop.
She said on her return, the woman found the shack on fire and despite the desperate efforts of neighbours the intensity was too high and the children burned to death.
The deceased children are aged 11 months, three and five years old, and were two boys and a little girl.
Naidu says the cause of the fire is not yet known, and police have opened an inquest docket.
