Two gunmen fired several shots at Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth where an ANC meeting was underway.
Police said the incident happened at around 11am on Sunday when they first opened fire outside the entrance to the hall before going inside and firing more shots into the ceiling.
No one was injured.
“The motive is unknown at this stage although police suspect the aim was to disrupt an ANC meeting that was taking place on the first floor,” said Captain Andre’ Beetge.
He said the gunmen fled on foot and police are now appealing to anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to contact New Brighton police.
It is understood that the meeting was called to discuss the disbanding of the ANC’s regional executive in Nelson Mandela Bay by the party’s Provincial Executive Committee.
