EP Golf Union President Andre Heunis has reacted with shock to the news that the acting commanding officer of EP Command has closed the Shark River Golf Club with immediate effect.
The 9 hole course at the army base in Port Elizabeth has been in existence for more than 60 years and has more then 350 members - most of them civilian.
In a signed letter to the chairman of the club, lieutenant-colonel Vusumzi Ngcobo states that he's decided to stop the playing of golf in the unit with immediate effect as it appears that it is an Occupational Health and Safety Risk.
The Herald reports that his decision to close the course comes after a golf ball smashed the back window of a Toyota Corolla parked near the entrance to the base late last month.
Heunis told AlgoaFM news that he and his executive would be seeking an urgent meeting with Lieutenant-colonel Ngcobo to try and resolve the issue amicably.
Heunis said it would be a sad day for the sport and the club if the order was made permanent as the Union could not afford to lose members and peoples' livelihoods were at stake.
The acting commander could not be reached for comment.
