Kouga Municipality has warned bathers, paddlers and the public in general along the St Francis Bay coastline to be cautious, as a whale carcass floating in the Bay off-shore of St Francis Bay is attracting sharks that have been witnessed feeding on the carcass.
Kouga spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall says surfers and swimmers at Cape St Francis are advised to stay out of the sea on Friday.
She says the municipality, in conjunction with the Cape St Francis Civic Association, has arranged for the whale to be towed out to the main current out at sea, so as to prevent the carcass from washing up along the coastline.
Meanwhile, the Full Moon Spring Tide, which peaked on Thursday night, will result in higher than normal high tides and a lower than normal low tides and stronger than normal rip currents lasting into the early part of next week.
The National Sea Rescue Institute has urged the public to be cautious around the coast today and this weekend.
