Several buildings damaged in overnight storm

Several houses, a school and a municipal building were damaged when a storm tore through the Nkonkobe Municipal area in the Eastern Cape late on Wednesday night.

Municipality spokesperson, Siyasanda Hompashe, says Ward Seven appeared to be hard hit.

She says the roofs of houses were blown off in Hertzog, while a tree fell on a school in Lushington Village, damaging the roof.

Hompashe says in the area of Stanley, the roofs of three houses were blown off, while the roof of the recently refurbished municipal hall in Oakdene was also blown off.

A pregnant woman in Hertzog reportedly lost her baby during the chaos which ensued when the storm lashed the area from midnight.

Eskom also reported power disruptions to 10 000 customers.

Spokesperson, Ntosh Mafumbata, says technicians are working hard to restore supply to Alice, Debenek, Binfield, Hogsback, Dutywa, Cofimvaba and Dordrecht.
