A seventh suspect, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a police Warrant Officer of Centane in the Eastern Cape, appeared in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, killing of a police officer, and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says 44-year-old Simphiwe Mlinjani was arrested on Wednesday at Fort Beaufort while on his way to Whittlesea from Outshoorn where he had been residing lately.
She says the Warrant Officer was shot and killed at his Ndabakazi homestead in Butterworth after his wife had allegedly conspired with a group of seven suspects from Komani to kill him.
Captain Mgolodela says the suspects are alleged to have been approached with the hope of getting a payment of R1 million from the pay-out of the would-be deceased’s life cover should the murder be successful.
Six suspects, including the deceased's wife, were arrested in October last year.
Mlinjani and his six co-accused will be back in the Butterworth Regional Court on Monday.
