Four people being questioned in connection with mass Kariega shooting

Police are interviewing four people of interest in connection to two mass shooting incidents in Kwanobuhle in Kariega in which eight people were killed and a ninth person wounded.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says investigators discovered a possible hideout on Friday morning.

"At about 8 am this morning the investigation team infiltrated a possible hideout in Summerstrand and we have four persons of interest that we are busy questioning," she said.

No further details were provided.

On Thursday police reported that the bodies of five people were found in a car on Mabi Street in Kwanobuhle, with another victim found dead nearby.

The second incident was reported in Zolanqini Street, where three men were shot dead in a car. Police said the car they were in had been reported stolen.

According to the police, all victims aged between 18 and 25 years old sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.

Investigators are also probing a possible link between the two shootings.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene implemented a 72-hour activation plan to track and trace the perpetrators.
