Seven die in EC accidents


At least seven people were killed in separate accidents in the Eastern Cape on Saturday morning.

Four people were killed in an accident on the N9 between Willowmore and Aberdeen at around 06h30.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says the accident happened when a Kia SUV lost control and overturned.

It says two men, a woman and a child were declared dead at the scene while two others sustained critical injuries.

Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the vehicle was travelling from George to Pearston with three men, two women and a child at the time of the accident.

In the second accident, three people were killed on the N2 between Makhanda and Peddie at around 7 am.

Binqose says four others sustained critical injuries when a Toyota Avanza overturned after the driver lost control and it overturned.

He says the vehicle with eight occupants were travelling in the direction of Peddie for a funeral.

Binqose says the male driver escaped unharmed.

The injured taken to Nompumelelo Hospital for medical assistance.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
