Uitenhage police have arrested seven suspects for allegedly breaking into a liquor store on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the men were arrested in Kwanobuhle following the break-in at a liquor store in Bubbs Avenue.
She said a security company responded to the alarm going off and discovered that the lock on the front door had been broken and liquor had been stolen.
“Information received at the time was that the suspects drove off in a white Toyota Avanza with a red dot on the registration plate,” Naidu said.
The information was circulated and SAPS Kwanobuhle Crime Prevention Unit members spotted the car in Matamzima Road.
“A few bottles of alcohol were found in the vehicle while it is alleged that the other liquor may have already been sold. Three occupants were arrested,” Naidu said
She said further investigation led police to a house in Kwanobuhle where four more suspects were found drinking and promptly arrested.
“Three suspects are detained on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property and contravention of the Disaster Management Act for not been confined to their residence while the other four suspects were detained on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property,” Naidu said.
“Detectives are investigating the possible link to the break-in at the liquor store.”
The suspects will appear in the Kwanobuhle Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
