Six cats, two dogs and a bird were among the animals that were evacuated this week when the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals in Conville, George burned down.
Manager, Moira Gibbs, says the fire started at about 08:30 on Monday morning shortly after they switched on the incinerator.
The animals that were evacuated are temporarily being kept at the George SPCA.
Gibbs says they usually discharge the animals on Friday afternoons and were therefore lucky that the dispensary wasn’t full.
The incinerator was only used to burn carcasses and was seen as a service for the less fortunate animal owners in the area.
Gibbs says the part of the building that hosted the crematorium could not be saved.
