The Eastern Cape Education Department has sent its District Director to Alheit van der Merwe Primêre Skool in Maletswai (Aliwal North), to investigate the cause of a fire that destroyed several buildings in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Department spokesperson Mali Mtima, says the fire damaged an administration block, a computer laboratory, classrooms including ablution facilities.
He says the school management has estimated damages at being around R800 000.
Mtima says they suspect that the fire started in the toilets but investigations are still underway.
He says all relevant roleplayers have been summoned to ensure that a plan is put in place so that the teaching of learners is not disrupted.
