Service delivery protest in Molteno turns violent

Eastern Cape police have arrested 21 people in the Molteno district on charges of public violence.

Captain Ursula Roelofse says protests began on Wednesday morning and were centred around the lack of the supply of electricity.

Roelofse says protesters handed a memorandum to the municipality and were then joined by another group of people.

It was then that the situation got out of control, with up to 3 000 residents of the area blockading roads in Molteno and burning tyres.

Roelofse said the Police would not tolerate this type of behaviour and were expecting to make more arrests soon.
