Security problems at WSU

Security remains a big problem at the Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha Campus.

This was noted by the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training during an inspection at the university this week.

Committee Chair, advocate Ishmael Malale, says the lack of campus control has already led to the death of three students in times of violent strike action.

The university was placed under administration in November last year after an assessment by an independent assessor appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande.

Advocate Malale says they also noted that the demand for financial assistance far outstrips the funds available from the National Students Financial Aid Scheme, resulting in many students not benefiting from the scheme.
