The Hawks have confirmed that a G4 Security officer was gunned down during a cash-in-transit heist in Motherwell in Gqeberha.
Spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase, says the incident happened on Monday afternoon when the security company had collected money at Zonke Super Spar.
He says the assailants accosted and disarmed a G4S crew member and took the money box while his accomplices threatened the driver with assault rifles and explosives and allegedly threatened to bomb the vehicle.
Nkwalase says a third security officer came out of the store and when he saw what was happening, opened fire.
He says the suspects shot back, fatally wounding the security officer, before fleeing in a stolen Mercedes Benz which was later found abandoned.
Meanwhile, Nkwalase says another incident was reported in eQonce, formerly King Williams Town, when armed suspects also accosted a G4 Security crew and took the money box outside another Spar supermarket.
He says however that they threw the money box out of their moving car when it exploded.
Nkwalase says no arrests were made in either incident which is being investigated by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team.
