An Eastern Cape security guard is in custody after being arrested in connection with a cash in transit heist worth millions of rands.
Captain Yolisa Mgolodela of the Hawks reports that 43-year-old SBV security guard Simphiwe Twanya made a brief appearance in the PE Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
He was remanded in custody until the 14th of July for a formal bail application.
This follows an incident at Cleary Park Estate at 05h25 on the 2nd of July where three security guards were at a service station loading cash into automatic teller machines.
Captain Mgolodela says the security guards were accosted by a group of unknown gunmen who disarmed them and fled in four getaway vehicles.
The suspects took four service firearms, including a rifle, as well as millions of rands in cash.
One of the guards sustained a head injury during the heist.
The Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, along with the SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit and Local Criminal Record Centre members, attended the scene.
During an intensive investigation, Twanya who was the driver of the security vehicle on the day of the attack was arrested on the 4th of July.
The investigation to apprehend the other suspects is continuing.
