Second man dies after jumping off Shark Rock Pier

Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach in Gqeberha

Algoa FM news

A second man has died after jumping off Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach in Summerstrand, Gqeberha.

The latest incident happened early on Sunday evening when eyewitnesses saw an unknown man jumping off the pier.

Colonel Priscilla Naidu says bystanders managed to rescue him from the surf, but he was already dead.

By lunchtime on Tuesday, the victim had still not been identified.

On the 1st of February, a man believed to be intoxicated was seen socializing with three women when he too jumped off the pier.

The 28-year-old Luthando Bailey was rescued from the surf with the help of bystanders but was also already dead.

The 140 metre long Shark Rock Pier was completed in 1998 and resulted in the creation of the now popular Hobie Beach by stopping the tidal drift sands.

In the late 1990’s it was not uncommon for intoxicated students to jump off the pier, but the dangers are obvious and the practice is strictly forbidden.
