The Department of Transport has confirmed yet another CIT robbery in the Eastern Cape.
On Tuesday, traffic on the R75 came to a standstill just before the Peddie turnoff when an unknown number of suspects blew up a CIT vehicle.
This is the second robbery in just seven days.
Last week Tuesday, two security guards were injured following a cash-in-transit heist on the N2 near Mdantsane.
The stretch of road between Berlin and Qonce (formerly King Williams Town) was closed for over an hour and traffic had to be diverted. Explosives were also used.
An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen.
Both matters are now being handled by the Hawks and no further details are available.
Spokesperson for the Department of Transport Unathi Binqose told Algoa FM News it was extremely concerning to them not only that there were two robberies in one week, but also the severe impact it had on the traffic on these two busy roads.
According to the latest quarterly crime Stats released by SAPS, Cash-in-transit (CIT) heists increased by 19% in the first two months of 2023, compared to the same period last year.
