The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has introduced SA Express as the second airline after Airlink to operate from the recently revamped Mthatha Airport.
Department spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose, said SA Express will start operating out of the Mthatha Airport from Monday with a route between Johannesburg and Mthatha.
He said an additional airline is not only good for healthy competition within the airline space, it's also good news for the economic prospects of this vastly developing region.
"Our main aim is to ensure that we introduce other routes like the Mthatha to Cape Town. There a lot of people who have been complaining about it they say that it's too long by bus and that is fact,".
Bhinqose added that the department would have to see some positive results happening from this new route in order for it to have bargaining powers when it comes to negotiating for an extension for roads in the area.
