Police intensified the search on Saturday for the suspects involved in the clashes between men from two Eastern Cape villages which left eight people dead.

The South African National Defence Force has also assisted SAPS in the ongoing search operation at Mpheni Villages near Mount Ayliff.

This followed the clash between men from Mpheni and Nokhatshiles Villages early on Christmas Day which left a total of eight people dead.

Six others from both villages were injured in the violent confrontation.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said, Eastern Cape commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga was personally involved in the search in the mountains around the villages on Saturday.

“All forces are on the ground in search of other suspects believed to have been involved in the fierce fighting between the two groups,” he said.

Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi also despatched reinforcements to ensure the speedy stabilisation of the area.
