Eastern Cape police said seven people were killed in clashes between men from two villages in the Mount Ayliff area on Christmas Day.
Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, said according to eyewitness accounts groups of men from the Mpeni and Nokhatshiles villages clashed early on Friday morning.
She said most of the deceased were from the Nokhatshiles Village while six men from both villages were hospitalised with serious injuries.
Soci said police reinforcements have been sent to the area to maintain calm.
Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane, has condemned the clashes and was due to visit the area on Friday.
