East London police have opened an inquest docket after a 17 year old youth went missing in the surf at Eastern beach.
The NSRI says rescue volunteers were activated on Sunday in response to a drowning in progress.
Station commander, Geoff McGregor, says they were assisted in the search by the police, East London Fire and Rescue Services as well as the Bhisho government's health EMS rescue helicopter.
He says despite an extensive search there was no sign of the teenager who is believed to have been caught in a rip current.
